Description:  This course introduces the practices and principles of interpersonal communication in both dyadic and group settings. Emphasis is on the communication process; issues addressed include perception, listening, self-disclosure, speech apprehension, ethics, nonverbal communication, conflict, power, and dysfunctional communication. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills, apply basic principles of group discussion, and manage conflict in interpersonal communication situations. 

Prerequisite: 1st year student 

Learning Objectives: Students will 

  • explore the principles and dynamics of interpersonal communication; 
  • identify effective communication skills within different cultural contexts. 
  • understand how to use appropriate interpersonal communication skills and problem-solving techniques in a group setting.

  • Write a 7 – 10 page Essay presenting a clear, well-organized, and informative paper based on personal research about an interpersonal communication problem or issue; Submit within the first 6 weeks of starting this course. 
  • Write a 7 – 10 page Essay on strategies to communicate to individuals of various levels of listening skills and interest to the conversation. Submit within 3 months of  starting this course.
